Richard Mauze Burr is the Reverend’s son. David Horace White Burr and Martha Burr. He was born on November 30, 1955 in Charlottesville, Virginia. His father pastored the First Presbyterian Church for 23 years until his retirement in 1986. He was also in the United States Navy where he served as a member of Navy Underwater Demolition during World War II. He lost to incumbent Democratic Rep. , Stephen L. Neal. Two years later, Burr challenged again to represent the Tar Heel State’s Fifth District and this time the poll results favored him.
In 2004, Richard Burr chose to run for United States Senate from North Carolina. In the Republican primary election, he scored an easy victory over fellow Republicans John Ross Hendrix and Albert Wiley, winning an 87.92% landslide, making him the Republican representative for the U.S. Senate polls of North Carolina in 2004. His opposition Democrat, Erskine Bowled, ran unopposed in his party’s primary.
On November 2, 2004, Republican candidate Richard Burr edged his Democratic opponent in a close poll by 51.6% to 47.0%, making him the winner of the United States Senate election in North Carolina.
In 2010, Burr elected to run as a senator from North Carolina. His re-election was a success, he defeated his Democratic opposition Elaine Marshall 54.8% to 43.1%, becoming the first Republican since Jesse Helms to be re-elected to the United States Senate from North Carolina.
In 2016, Burr ran for the third term and was lucky 3 times to edge out Democratic Representative Deborah K. Ross, 51.1% to 45.4%.
