Musical talent shows have given us some of the best musicians we know and Melanie Martinez is one of them. A lover of singing since childhood, Martinez became a high school junior in 2012 thanks to her success on the third season of The Voice, she was eliminated in the top 6.

On April 28, 1995, somewhere in the shopping districts of Astoria, Queens, New York, Murcy Martinez and Jose Martinez, of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, welcomed their daughter Melanie Adele Martinez. From the age of four, his parents began raising him in Baldwin, New York, on Long Island, where they had moved.
Martinez was passionate about music from a very young age. She would grow up listening to music from Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Britney Spears, Shakira and The Beatles. From kindergarten, Melanie began to develop her compositional side by writing poetry. While attending Plaza Elementary School, Melanie was fortunate to have a teacher in Mr. Nadien who helped nurture her passion for music.
Nadien taught him to sing and play the recorder. He arranged for his students, including Melanie, to record a Christmas CD which he describes to the Long Island Herald as a very exciting experience.
As a child, Melanie Martinez was very emotional. She often cries when overwhelmed by her inability to express her feelings. When she rose to fame, these early experiences inspired her debut album, Cry Baby, a name she called upon at a time when her emotions were going to get the best of her.
At Baldwin High School, at the age of 14, Martinez learned to play the guitar. With the help of the internet, she was able to download chord charts of songs she liked. She attempted to create her own music by adding these chord diagrams to the poetry she had written.
Martinez wanted to become a professional musician and took the first step towards achieving her dreams in 2012 when she was a high school student. This first step was to participate in the MSG Varsity Talent Show. Unfortunately, she was eliminated in the second round. Undeterred, Martinez improved his voice and kept his dream alive.
She then decided to try out for the third season of NBC’s voice. On the way to the unreported audition, held as a public call, at Javits Center, Martinez was driving with his mother when their car broke down. However, they were able to flag down a taxi and get there in time for the auditions.
Months later after that initial audition, Martinez was hanging out at Roosevelt Field Mall when she was briefed on her progress to the second round. She went to the blind auditions where she sang to woo four judges including; Adam Levine, Britney Spears, Ceelo Green and Blake Shelton. She chose Spear’s Toxic as her favorite song. Three judges, excluding Spears, turned around in their chairs and Martinez selected frontman Maroon 5.
As a member of Team Adam, Melanie Martinez made it to the top 6 before being eliminated on December 3, 2012. The following year, Martinez flew under the radar working independently on her own music. And then, in February 2014, she revealed the product of her year-long hard work, a single titled Dollhouse. She then signed a contract with Atlantic Records and followed up the single with the release of an EP of the same name.
In August 2015 Melanie released her debut album Cry Baby. On December 4, 2017, she found herself in the middle of a sexual assault allegation. Her ex-best friend and band mate Timothy Heller, whom she had performed with multiple times, took to Twitter to recount how Martinez had sexually assaulted and raped her without her consent. Martinez took to Twitter later the same day to deny allegations that she never did with Heller what she disagreed with.
