The entertainment industry is no stranger to actors and celebrities whose careers have been cut short by substance abuse and addiction. It is therefore something to be excited about when someone seeks help and begins the odious journey that leads to an addiction-free lifestyle. This action not only serves as an encouragement, but also as an example to young people who are seeking freedom from drug addiction. Jason Mewes is a talented American television and film actor. He is also an internet radio host and film producer. He had played an iconic role in a film that has since become a mainstay. Jason, however, hasn’t always had an easy and smooth life.
Who is Jason Mewes? Organic
Jason was born in Highlands, New Jersey on June 12, 1974. Jason never met his father and his mother was a former convict and drug addict. He grew up in a working class neighborhood and is called Jason Edward Mewes. Recalling how dire the situation was with his mother, Jason says she used to check into hotels, collect their televisions which she would sell for cash. He also added that she would also steal mail.
Mewes was exposed to drugs at an early age, and through his mother’s illness, he would later find himself on the same slippery slope. However, from a young age as told by his best friend and later filmmaker Kevin Smith, Jason has always been a fun, easy-going guy.
Kevin Smith had Mewes make his film debut as Jay in the 1994 film Clerks. Mewes at the time earned his living roofing. Although it was a low-budget film, it turned out to be a huge success, and Mewes was often asked to play the lead role in future productions.

Mewes has starred in many roles since, Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and sequels to some of his earlier films. Mewes and Kevin have a history of working closely together in films, the pair worked together in Scream 3, Bottoms Up and Canadian television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Both Kevin and Mewes host a weekly podcast called Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, in which Mewes discusses his substance abuse issues.
Although Mewes enjoyed some success early in his career, he also suffered from a substance abuse problem. He started using heroin after high school after appearing before Mallrats. While on the set of Pursue Amy and Dogma Mewes was under the influence. After being taken to rehab by Kevin, he calmed down, but quickly relapsed after finding a way to beat the urine tests.
Her mother has been diagnosed with AIDS, and JasonMewes settles in with her while trying to get clean. He was arrested in 1999 for possession of heroin in New Jersey. In 2001, he failed to appear in court and an arrest warrant followed. During this period, his friend Kevin Smith had sponsored him on several occasions and even hosted him. Mewes was kicked out as he was picked up on drugs again. He had also stolen Smith’s distributor card and charged $1,100 for heroin use. Kevin refused to give her a role in 2004 Jersey Girl. He turned a corner when he woke up on Christmas morning in 2003 to see his couch on fire with a lit candle. It remained clean for a few years, after surgery in 2009, but has been clean since 2010.
