What Does GOAT Mean?
The acronym GOAT (or G.O.A.T.) stands for "greatest of all time." It is a title reserved for the person regarded as the undisputed master of their sport. In addition to exceptional talent, the individual must maintain a consistently high level of achievement to be considered the GOAT.

While the term has been around for a long time, it was popularised in the twentieth century by heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, who declared himself "the greatest" after defeating Sonny Liston in 1964. It became Ali's nickname throughout his career, and he famously used it again after defeating George Foreman by knockout against all odds in 1974.
"Everybody stop talking now. Attention! I told you, all of my critics, that I was the greatest of all time when I beat Sonny Liston," Ali said following the fight dubbed the 'Rumble in the Jungle.'
Football's GOAT is a topic of constant debate within the community, but in recent years, the consensus has narrowed the question down to one of two players: Ronaldo or Messi. Because of the nature of the game, there is no hard and fast method for determining who is the greatest of all time, but that has yet to stop the debate.

Ronaldo and Messi have each won the Ballon d'Or, which is awarded to the best player in the world, five times, more than any other player. Messi has won the European Golden Shoe five times to Ronaldo's four, and Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times to Messi's four. However, Messi outnumbers Ronaldo 5-4 in terms of Champions League titles.
The criteria for determining who the GOAT is varied, but some have cited Ronaldo's ability to excel in various countries as a reason for putting him ahead of the Argentine. The dominance of Messi and Ronaldo over the last decade has reduced other iconic football figures to mere afterthoughts. However, there are still plenty of contenders for the title of GOAT. Other greats include Pele, Ronaldo (O Fenomeno), Alfredo Di Stefano, Zinedine Zidane, Michel Platini, and Franz Beckenbauer. Recent candidates include Andres Iniesta, Luka Modric, Xavi, and Ronaldinho.
