Dejan was born in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina (formerly SFR Yugoslavia) on July 5, 1989 to Croatian parents Silva and Sasa Lovren. His parents left Yugoslavia for Munich in 1992 because of the war in Bosnia. Lovren was then only three years old. The family lived in the German city of Munich for seven years before returning to Croatia, where they settled in Karlovac.

Career

Before starting his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb in 2004, Dejan Lovren played for two local clubs; NK Ilovac and NK Karlovac. He made his appearance for Zagreb in May 2006 in a match against NK Varteks Varaždin in the Croatian Premier League.

In July of the same year, he was loaned to NKInter Zaprešić for two seasons. At NK Inter Zaprešić he appeared in 50 league matches with a goal. When his loan expired, Lovren returned to Dinamo. He appeared in 38 matches throughout the 2008-09 season and scored three goals. The following season, he played in all four UEFA Champions League qualifying matches between Dinamo and Pyunik Yerevan and Red Bull Salzburg. He scored a header in the game against Pyunik.

In 2010, Dejan signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais. The contract amounted to 8 million euros plus 1.5 million euros in incentives. His first appearance for his new club came in January 2010 against AS Monaco in a Coupe de France match which ended in a 2–1 loss.

His Ligue 1 debut was also in the same month in a match against PSG which ended in a 2-1 win. In the first two matches, Dejan Lovren played for 90 minutes. He made a total of 10 appearances in the second half of the season, mostly as a substitute. He was also not present in the UEFA Champions League that season as he had previously played in the league for Dinamo Zagreb.

Following the departure of Jean-Alain Boumsonget Mathieu (both defenders) in the 2010/2011 season, Lovren’s playing time increased and he quickly established himself as the team’s regular starter. He has also proven to be a versatile defender playing at full-back or right-back. At the end of 2010, a Spanish sports weekly Don Balón ranked him among the 100 best young players in the world.

In January 2012, Dejan Lovren extended his contract with Olympique Lyonnais, to stay in France until 2016, but he sadly left Lyon for Southampton the following year, on a four-year contract estimated at 8.5 million. pound sterling. By the end of his first season, his name was on Bloomberg Sports’ Power 50 list. He was also ranked as the fifth highest ranked player in the Premier League, thus ranking 31st.
