Vidya Balan, born on 1 January 1978, is an Indian actress with a successful career in Bollywood. She has received numerous awards, including a National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards, and five Screen Awards. In 2014, she was honored with the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions to Indian cinema. Renowned for portraying strong female protagonists, Vidya has been credited with introducing a new archetype for the Hindi film heroine.
Vidya’s interest in acting started during her childhood, and she landed her first role in the 1995 sitcom *Hum Paanch*. She pursued a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Mumbai while making efforts to establish herself in the film industry. Her career took off when she starred in the Bengali drama *Bhalo Theko* in 2003 and subsequently gained acclaim for her role in the Hindi film *Parineeta* (2005).
