On Sunday, May 9, West Brom suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal, resulting in their relegation from the Premier League.
Following this loss, Sam Allardyce’s team finds itself 10 points adrift from safety in the English top flight with only three games remaining, making it mathematically impossible to secure their position.
West Brom fell behind against the Gunners within the first 30 minutes when Emile Smith Rowe scored from close range.
Nicolas Pepe then extended the home side’s lead in the 35th minute with a powerful strike into the top corner. Although Matheus Pereira gave the visitors hope in the second half, Willian ultimately secured the points with a late free kick.
“It’s not sunk in yet, but I’m sure I’ll wake up tomorrow and realize the situation,” Sam Allardyce told BT Sport. “I’m bitterly disappointed we’re not still in the fight.
“I’m not saying we would have avoided relegation, but we should have been closer. We should have taken it down to the last three games based on how we performed. The creating of chances has been there but the converting has not.
“We had [enough] time to pull it round. Our real problem was not beating the bottom-six sides when we came up against them. The results against Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City should have been bonus points.”
West Brom still have games against Liverpool, West Ham, and Leeds to round off the campaign.
After just one season back in the top flight, they will return to the Championship with Sheffield United, while Fulham look set to follow, having taken just one point from their last six games.
This is the first time in 17 years Sam Allardyce will be relegated from the top flight.
