New Edition Ages Now
New Edition is an American R&B group that was created in 1978 in the Roxbury district of Boston, Massachusetts. In the 1980s, the band was at the pinnacle of its success. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant were the initial members of the group. Brown departed the band in late 1985 to pursue a successful solo career, and they reformed as a quintet for one record until bringing in Johnny Gill in 1987. "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "Mr. Telephone Man" were among his early hits. On the majority of the songs, Tresvant was the lead singer. Both Gill and Tresvant released solo albums in 1990, while the remaining three members formed the Bell Biv Devoe trio; the quartet didn't work together for the first half of the decade.

Following BET's popular mini-series 'The New Edition Story,' we get an update on what the original New Edition members are up to. The R&B group New Edition was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday (Jan. 23), a fitting tribute to the '80s quintet responsible for some of the decade's most iconic hits, and as viewers learned during BET's three-night biopic The New Edition Story, the road to fame is a bumpy one.

The mini-series dug into New Edition's beginnings as child stars while pulling back the curtains on the group's flaws. It dominated social media and drew 4.4 million total viewers with its premiere telecast on Tuesday, with 2.6 million of those viewers in the 19-49 age range. While both the children's cast and their adult counterparts did an excellent job portraying Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Bobby Brown, and Johnny Gill, fans were curious about the group's real-life members' present status.

Bobby Brown
While Bobby Brown was known as New Edition's resident bad boy, he was an unmistakable star and the first member of the group to pursue a successful solo career after being booted out in the mid-'80s. Brown's larger-than-life presence and grittier, new jack swing-influenced sound led in his breakout album Don't Be Cruel, which produced five top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits and earned him his first Grammy award for "Every Little Step." Bobby Brown continued to make music despite his personal life — he was Whitney Houston's husband and father to the late Bobbi Kristina Brown — often overshadowing his musical legacy.

His most recent album, The Masterpiece, was released in 2012. Brown founded Heads of State with NE comrades Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant and went on their own tour, only to reconnect with the rest of the NE members later. Bobby Brown, along with fellow R&B giants Keith Sweat, Avant, and El DeBarge, will headline the Valentine's Day Music Festival this year. Apart from music, Brown and his wife Alicia founded Bobby Brown Foods, an all-natural food product brand aimed at providing consumers with healthful seasonings and sauces. Brown has also appeared on BET's scripted series Real Husbands of Hollywood, which is written by Kevin Hart.
Johnny Gill
Gill joined NE as one of the lead vocalists (together with Ralph Tresvant) after Brown's expulsion, doing much of the heavy lifting on two of the group's biggest successes, "Can You Stand The Rain" and "If This Isn't Love." Outside of his NE membership, Gill had a lot of solo success – his self-titled album from 1990 went double platinum, and follow-ups Proactive (1993) and Let's Get The Mood Right (1996) also went gold. The singer hasn't missed a beat since going solo, and his most recent studio album, Game Changer, was released in 2014. Gill will perform as an opener for Charlie Wilson's In It To Win It tour, which will begin in February.
Ralph Tresvant
Tresvant has been the group's lead vocalist since its inception, and despite the addition of Gill later in the band's tenure, Tresvant's voice has remained an integral aspect of the band's sound. In 1990, he released his self-titled debut album, which was well-received, thanks in part to the hit track "Sensitivity," which reached number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Tresvant dabbled in acting and media work, starring as Sam Cooke in the James Brown movie Get On Up in 2014. He started his own radio show, Inside the Ride, in his hometown of Boston, in September.

Ricky Bell
Bell was a backing vocalist for the group, but when Bell Biv DeVoe emerged, he was the frontman for the newly formed spin-off trio, whose debut album Poison went 4x platinum and spawned the all-time classic title tune. Bell is now on tour with Bell Biv Devoe, and the ensemble performed at Steve Harvey's Showtime at the Apollo recently. BBD's new album, Three Stripes, was released on Friday, Jan. 27. It is the trio's first record in nearly 15 years.
Michael Bivins
Michael Bivins demonstrated that he was more than just a musical talent in The New Edition Story, as he decided to learn about the business side of the music industry, which led to him discovering '90s hit making groups like Boyz II Men and Another Bad Creation, as well as founding the Motown-distributed record label Biv 10 Records, which produced the popular girl group 702. Last October, the basketball court at Ramsay Park in Boston, Bivins' and the group's hometown, was named for the singer, who "spent a lot of time playing ball."

Ronnie DeVoe
DeVoe was adamant in joining NE when it was still in its infancy, and he was eventually accepted thanks to his uncle, choreographer Brooke Payne. Later with Bell Biv DeVoe, he joined Bell and Bivins. Ronnie DeVoe may be well-known as a member of the boy band Backstreet Boys, but he found a second profession as the founder and CEO of DeVoe Broker Associates, an Atlanta-based real estate firm, later in life.
