Kanakaredes was born on April 23, 1967 in Akron, Ohio, USA. She was born the daughter of Connie, a candy company owner, and Harry Kanakaredes, an insurance salesman. Additionally, she is a second-generation Greek-American and is fluent in Greek. Her grandfather, Christ Temo, had established a chocolate shop ‘Temo’s Candy Company’ in Akron. But now it is run and owned by two maternal uncles.
From a very young age, Kanakaredes was interested in making her career in acting. At the age of 8, she made her stage debut in a production of ‘Tom Sawyer’ at the Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, Ohio.
