Larry King bio
Even though it was as Larry that we all came to know the man, it was as Lawrence Harvey Zeiger that he was born on November 19, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised alongside a brother by his parents, Aaron Zeiger who owned a restaurant and Jennie – a garment worker.
Since childhood, Larry dreamed ofworking in broadcasting, but he lost interest in school after the death of his father. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the family was forced onto welfare and soon after graduating from Lycée Lafayette, King decided to find a job to help his mother and brother.
Following the advice of a CBS broadcaster, Larry moved to Miami where the media market was growing rapidly and he could get a job without any experience. And of course he got a radio set with WMBM which was then WAHR. This is where Lawrence Harvey Zeiger became Larry King after his manager told him that his real name wasn’t easy to remember while sounding too ethnic.
As he would gradually climb the Radio and Television ladder, he caught America’s attention in 1985 when he started the Larry King Live CNN show. The show was a success thanks to its interview style and non-confrontational approach. After a very successful spell, he said he was leaving CNN in 2012.
