He is the father of the actors Jason, and Tyler Ritter. In his early days, he performed in many plays in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and West Germany. Later, he starred in many films and television series.

His debut movie was The Barefoot Executive in 1971, and his debut TV series was The Dating Game in 1967. He is famous for his role as Jack Tripper in the sitcom Three’s Company.
