The fashion designer was born on July 22, 1963, in the United States. He is of British nationality although he was born in the United States. After he was born, his family moved to Crawley, West Sussex in the UK where he grew up. James Jebbia was 19 when he returned to the United States. At that time, he was ready to explore the world.
Before beginning his fashion journey, James Jebbia tested the waters of the film industry appearing in a few movies and shows. He played the character of Tommy Watson in the series, Grange Hill and also starred in a few other projects. Jebbia took a big step into business in the early 90s when he worked at a skate and clothing store, Parachute, located in SoHo, Manhattan. He then partnered with streetwear retailer, Shawn Stüssy for three years before finally deciding to have his own establishment.
James Jebbia’s first establishment was UnionNYC, a retail outlet where he sold English brands. He then founded Supreme in 1994 with the opening of its first store on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, New York. He mainly employed young skaters – a good move that helped him keep up to date with trends. Jebbia’s first group of employees were cast members of the Larry Clark film Kids. The company started with a few T-shirts, which evolved into cotton hoodies.
