Ian Joseph Somerhalder was born on November 8, 1978 in Covington, Louisiana. He is the second child of Edna and Robert Somerhalder. her mother is a massage therapist while her father is a building contractor. He has two siblings, Robert, his older brother and Robyn, his younger sister. For his secondary education, Ian attended Mandeville High School, a public school. He started his modeling career from the age of 10 and has been on the runway of great designers such as Gucci, Versace and Calvin Klein.

In 2000, Ian Somerhalder appeared in the Warner Bros. Young Americans, playing the role of Hamilton Fleming, the Dean’s son. The show was a spinoff of the hit TV show, Dawson’s Creek. In 2002, Ian teamed up with James Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel and Shannyn Sossamon in the dark comedy, drama film The Rules of Attraction – based on a novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The model-turned-actor got his breakthrough role in 2004 when he portrayed the role of Boone Carlyle on the wildly popular TV show Lost. Despite the character’s death early in the series, Ian Somerhalder reprized the same role a few times, including in the finale.
In 2009, Ian took on the role of an assassin in the action thriller The Tournament. That same year, he landed his most notable role: portraying the character of Damon Salvatore on the CW’s drama series, The Vampire Diaries. In addition to being on screen, Ian began directing several episodes of the series during the third season. Based on his performance in The Vampire Diaries, he received various Teen Choice Awards and a People’s Choice Award.
The actor has also appeared in several films including Lost City Raiders (2008) and Years of Living Dangerously (2014). In April 2018, he was reportedly involved in the Netflix drama. V-Wars series, playing the role of Dr. Luther Swann.
