The reason Purple Guy or William Afton killed the 5 children is still unknown; Scott Cawthon has made no pronouncements on why William Afton killed the children in FNAF, however it appears to be most likely out of stress over the loss of a child, or as a residual experiment.

Twisted ones, The Silver Eyes, and The Fourth Closet are the titles of the novels that hint at the motives for his actions. They believe he killed the children in order to achieve immortality. In some ways, the novels imply that he did it as a power play to leave his mark on the world and the lives of others. He was also rumoured to be competing with Henry for some degree of notoriety.
Others claim he went insane after his children, CC and Elizabeth, perished, leading to the children's murder spree. Since the deaths of Chris and Elizabeth Afton, William has clearly lost the plot. When they went dancing, he pulled a knife on his wife.
