Despite attending Susan Miller Dorsey High School and demonstrating talent in tennis, Ross struggled with illiteracy and failed to secure a college sports scholarship. He later attended Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where he had his initial encounter with cocaine as a teenager. This eventually led him to become a drug dealer.

His association with Nicaraguan refugees, Oscar Danilo Blandón and Norwin Meneses Cantarero, enabled him to procure cocaine at cheaper rates. His primary clientele included Los Angeles street gangs, particularly the Bloods and Crips, and he discreetly invested his earnings to conceal his illicit activities from his mother.

However, his involvement in the drug trade led to legal troubles, and he was charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine.
