There, Thompson attended North Central High School, subsequently obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1984.

Thompson initiated his career as an engineer at a military aircraft manufacturer, now a part of Northrop Grumman, where he remained from 1985 to 1990. In 1990, he joined McDonald’s specifically to design robotic equipment for food transport. Although initially hesitant to accept the job, he eventually seized the opportunity and returned to the suburbs of Chicago. Additionally, he became a participant in the company’s Black Career Development program, a commitment he has maintained to this day.

Rapidly ascending the corporate ranks, by 1992, he was already promoted to the position of Project Manager and Staff Director for the Quality Development department. In 1994, Thompson transitioned to Operations, where he served as a fry cook, shift manager, assistant manager, and co-manager of the South Chicago restaurant. Over the subsequent years, Thompson continued to progress, ultimately assuming the role of regional manager for the San Diego, California Region, comprising 350 restaurants. Subsequently, he ascended to the position of Senior Vice President of the Midwest Division, overseeing over 2,200 restaurants. His ascent continued as he became the president of the West Division, responsible for 4,000 units, consistently augmenting his net worth.

By 2005, Thompson had ascended to the position of Executive Vice President and concurrently held the role of Chief Operations Officer (COO) for all US restaurants.
