The famous actor was born Denzel Washington on December 28, 1954. He was named after his father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr. His mother, named Lennis Lynne, was a beauty salon owner at the time of his birth. His father was an ordained Pentecostal minister who was also an employee of the New York City Department of Water and the local S. Klein department store. The family lived in Mount Vernon, New York at the time.
Denzel Washington taught at Mount Vernon until 1968 at Pennington Grimes Elementary School. 1968 was the year his parents separated and Denzel Washington, then only 14 years old, experienced a dramatic change in his life. Lennis Lynne took her son to a private preparatory school known as the Oakland Military Academy, located in New Windsor, New York. It was a decision that helped lift Washington out of the bad company he kept, and he was therefore discouraged from following the path of some of his then-friends who ended up in prison.
After Oakland Military Academy, Denzel Washington attended Mainland High School before transferring to Texas Tech University. He would later go on to earn a BA.
