Daryl Coley was an American gospel singer, pastor, and former member of the group “Helen Stephens and the Voices of Christ.” This famous artist was known for singing the life « Jesus saves » and « Beyond the veil ». Coley grew up in Berkley California in a Christian home and there he learned the art of playing instruments such as the clarinet and piano.

Daryl Coley: Early Life and Education
Daryl Coley was born on October 30, 1955 in Berkeley, California. He did not have the easiest start in life, as his parents separated when he was only 5 years old. According to reports, he was able to learn a lot about gospel music from his mother, which seemed to have influenced him. It was thanks to his encouragement that Daryl learned to play instruments like the piano and the clarinet.

When Coley was 13, Edwin Hawkins’ contemporary arrangement of “Oh Happy Day” caught his attention. This encouraged him to join the group “Helen Stephens and the Voices of Christ” after hearing them perform for the first time in December 1969. While in school, Coley studied with Phillip Reader at Castle Mont High School. He was heavily influenced by Reader and then his career began when he started playing organ for the Eddie Hawkins Singers.

Daryl was then given the role of music director and this helped names like Tremaine Hawkins start a solo career. Coley then switched to mainstream music and sang in jazz clubs. She collaborated with many famous names like Phillip Bailey, Rodney Franklin and Nancy Wilson. She then released her debut solo album “Just Daryl” in 1986. The album was a massive success and even earned Coley Grammy nominations.
Daryl later released more albums after the success. His song “ You’re Right on Time ” climbed to the third position on the Gospel charts. His next album, “When the Music Stops”, took first place in the same category.

Coley was enjoying a sweet little life, but suddenly things took a turn for the worse. She was getting sick and was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. This later resulted in temporary blindness and Coley spent the rest of her life battling the disease.

As mentioned above, Daryl grew up in a home with a strong leaning towards Christianity. A lot about him is the image of his mother that influenced him in music and Coley kept that character about him until the last stages of his life. He later married Jenelle Coley and has three children with her. He also adopted Antonio Brooks, which shows the beautiful side of this musician.

Daryl struggled with juvenile diabetes for a long time and this caused him temporary blindness. During the last days of his life, he couldn’t even control his body and his vision almost disappeared.
Coley passed away on March 15, 2016 on a Tuesday night. In the end, it was her kidney failure that took her life. Coley closed her eyes in the presence of her loved ones who did their best to keep Coley comfortable. Coley has been gone for a little over 2 years and although the physical sense of him is no longer with us, he and his music will remain with us forever.
