Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State, has passed away at the age of 78. The sad news was confirmed in a statement released by his first son, Chetachi Mbadinuju. According to the statement, the elder statesman died on Tuesday morning, April 11, at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.
The statement released by his son reads,
“With heavy hearts but utmost gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and associate, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State and elder statesman. ODERA as he was fondly called, passed peacefully at the age of 78 years on the morning of the 11th of April, 2023 at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness, surrounded by his family and loved ones. At this trying time, we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon him and those left behind to mourn him. His funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family.”
Mr. Chetachi, a lawyer, confirmed that his father passed away at the age of 78.
Chinwoke Mbadinuju lost his bid for reelection in 2003 amidst allegations of a gang up against him by some political godfathers. His tenure as governor was marked by political upheaval, including killings, destruction of public institutions and industrial action, which were attributed to efforts to make him unpopular and deny him reelection.
Born on 14th June 1945, the late governor obtained a BA in political science and a doctorate in government. He also earned a law degree from one of the top English universities. Prior to his political career, he worked as an associate professor of politics and African studies at the State University of New York and served as an editor of Times International. He had also worked as a personal assistant to the governor of the old Enugu State, Dr. Jim Chris Nwobodo, and as a personal assistant to President Shehu Shagari.
He was married to Nnebuogo Mbadinuju, and the couple had five children: Ada Mbadinuju (a medical doctor), Chetachi Mbadinuju (an entrepreneur), Nwachukwu Mbadinuju (an operations manager), Uche Mbadinuju, and Chima Mbadinuju.
May his soul rest in peace, Amen.
