Andre 3000 was born Andre Lauren Benjamin to Sharon Benjamin-Hodo and Lawrence Harvey Walker on May 27, 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a debt collector, while his mother, who raised him single-handedly, sold real estate.
Growing up, André and his mother lived in different cities; Atlanta, East Point and Bankhead, all over Georgia. This means that he attended different schools in all these cities. First it was Sarah Smith Elementary School, then Sutton Middle School, before going to Northside High School and Tri-Cities High School.
In high school, André became more and more interested inmusic and began to play. His abilities led him to become friends with Antwan Patton, known today as Big Boi, and the two high schoolers formed the band Outkast. After graduating, the duo who had created a local buzz signed with Atlanta-based label LaFace Records through which they released their debut album, Southernplayaliscadillacmuzik in 1994. The album went platinum and went on to win the group award New Rap Group of the Year Award at the Source Awards in 1995.
Outkast were riding the wave of their hit debut album, so they then experimented with a variety of styles and sounds including elements of hip-hop, soul, funk and jungle, all merged into their second and third albums; ATLiens (1996) and Aquemini (1998) both of which were commercially successful. In 2000, Andre, known as Dre at the time, adopted his full first name and added 3,000 to it as he and his partner released their critically and commercially acclaimed fourth album, Stankonia, which featured the Billboard Hot 100 number one hit, Mrs. Jackson
In 2002, Outkast won their first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for the song. The Whole World who featured their greatest hits album; Big Boi and Dre present… Outkast. The following year, they released the RIAA-certified Diamond, a double album titled Speakerboxxx/The Love Below which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Andre 3000 is part of the album with songs like Hey Ya!, Roses and Prototype where he explored his singing ability.
