Nissan is in the process of a major reboot.
The Japanese brand has one of the oldest fleets on sale, but by the end of the year could have one of the youngest.
All-new models due to arrive this year are the Qashqai small SUV followed by the all-important X-Trail mid-size SUV that competes with hyper popular models such as the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. A new Nissan Z sports car is also on its way this year.
Nissan has just revealed the new X-Trail will be priced from $36,750 (before on-road costs) and rise to $52,990. Every model has copped a price rise of at least $4000.
The X-Trail will be available in four trim levels: ST, ST-L, Ti and Ti-L.
ST ($36,750) and ST-L ($43,190) grades are available with two-wheel drive and five seats or four-wheel drive and seven seats.
All wheel grip and the extra seats add about $3000 to the price.
Ti ($49,990) and Ti-L ($52,990) are only available with all-wheel drive and five seats.
Power comes from a 2.5-litre petrol engine making 135kW and 244Nm, a jump of 9kW and 18Nm over the previous version.
Joining the line-up at a later date will be a hybrid e-Power version.
This model will work in the same way to the recently revealed Qashqai e-Power.
In the Qashqai e-Power the petrol engine never drives the wheels, instead it is used as a generator to power the electric motors
Alloy wheels on the new X-Trail range from 17 to 19 inches depending on trim level.
Cheaper versions get an eight-inch infotainment screen compared to the 12.3-inch touch screen and a digital instrument display of the same size in the Ti and Ti-L versions.
The top two models also benefit from a head-up display that projects vital information such as navigation directions, travelling speed and safety warnings onto the windscreen in front of the driver.
Other top-shelf goodies include a heated steering wheel, a Bose stereo and a hands-free tailgate.
All versions come with a comprehensive array of active safety equipment.
The X-Trail will automatically brake if it detects a potential collision with a car, pedestrian or cyclist.
It’ll let you know when a car is in your blind spot and if a car is approaching from the side as you reverse. A collection of sensors will help keep you centred in your lane.
All-wheel drive versions get selectable driving modes including Eco and Sport. There are also different driving modes for certain surfaces such as dirt, ice and snow.
The new Nissan X-Trail is expected to arrive towards the end of this year.
